About the Border Collie Border Collies are a magnificent breed. They are the workaholic of the dog world and are legendary for their stock sense. Personally, our dogs have saved us a lot of steps in the pasture and have kept me from getting hurt many a time with those huge billies and bucks. They are the world's premier sheep herder. They are noted for their intelligence, extraordinary instinct and working ability. They are a medium-sized athletic dog that controls stock with a stalking movement and an intense gaze known as "the eye."They have the ability to reason which gives them the ability to work out of sight of it's master. This breed needs a job, they are always thinking. If they do not get enough attention and exercise they can develop destructive behavior. They bond strongly with their owners. However, if you don't get out much or have a lot of time the border collie is not for you! They are a wonderful companion.
Border Collie History This beautiful breed was developed in the border country between Scotland and England. The initial breeders combined stock sense and working long hours in this loyal companion. Border Collies (aka. "Scotch Sheep Dog") maintained large flocks of sheep for shepherds. The breed that we know today has been around for more than 100 years. In 1860, Queen Victoria became an active enthusiast while watching trials in Scotland. At this point the divergence of the modern collie and the border began. There has been very little change from the original. The herding group of the AKC recognized this breed in 1995. (The ABCA focuses on the working stock dogs and that is where my passion lies.) I'm not saying anything against other registries and my dogs will be able to compete in agility and obedience, but it is one of the most beautiful things in my opinion to watch a good dog work stock. They are continued to be used worldwide today. One of the most important people to the border collie breed was RJ Lloyd Price. He was born in 1876. He instituted the sheepdog trials and astonished spectators while working his dogs with just hand signals and whistles. He was key in the knowledge that border collies are obedient, trainable and a natural appearance. Important Border Collies Old Hemp 1893-1901 undefeated at trials, most notable stud dog in history Old Kep born in 1901 contributed his "eye" He won 45 first place wins at trials JM Wilson's Cap born1937 never got to compete due to WWI but offspring proved to be tremendous trial dogs Gilchrist's Spot great-grandson of JM Wilson's Cap. winner of Scottish Nationals in both 1965 & 1966. His descendants were champions in trials in the 1970's. Winston Cap 1963-1972 descendant of JM Wilson's Cap, winner of International in 1965, prized stud dog, most collies today are his descendants.

Border Collie Health I have been told that there is a tolerance test now(MMR), but DO NOT give anything containing Ivermectin to these dogs until consulting your vet and having that test run. Here are some health issues that can affect border collies. Again, this info is not meant to scare you, just to better educate you about the breed. CEA (Collie Eye Anomaly)/ CH (Choroidal Hypoplasia) congenital disorder where parts of the eye, particularly retinal area, do not develop normally. Severity ranges from no visual impairment to blindness. It is not a progressive disease and affected dogs usually have mildly impaired vision. CEA is an autosomal recessive disorder - passed on and expressed equally between males and females, normal dog with CEA gene can pass that gene to the offspring. DNA tests can be performed to check. Glaucoma/Cataracts - both can be inherited, clouding of eyes. can cause blindness PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) - progressive disease where tissue in retina of eye is destroyed. Symptoms include noticing decreased ability to see at night. It can progress to total blindness Canine Hip Dysplasia - An osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease. Cartilage and joint breaks down and irregular bony remodeling due to stresses and inflammatory processes within the joint. An X-ray is needed to diagnose this genetic disease. Elbow Dysplasia - 3 different types of degenerative elbow disease that may occur singly or together. This is caused by several different genes. Epilepsy - characterized by seizures ("fits"). Diagnosis is made by exclusion of other diseases, no specific test. CL - (NCL Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis) It is a rare disease that affects the cells of the body, particularly nerve cells. It is not contagious, but inherited by a simple recessive gene. This disease only manifests itself in dogs which have inherited recessive genes from both parents. There is an accumulation of a waste product of cell metabolism which builds up and begins compressing and destroying healthy brain cells. Dogs will display behavior changes and rapidly deteriorate. TNS(Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome) - Symptoms are lameness, chronic diarrhea, fevers, loss of appetite, persistent bone and gastrointestinal infections. Bone marrow identifies the neutrophils that are not released into circulation which then causes the marrow to become clogged. TNS is call myelokathexis and thought to be genetic. OCD - A degenerative disease of the joint, bone and cartilage. It causes partial or complete detachment of a fragment of bone. An interaction of factors from genetic predisposition to environmental conditions such as over supplementation.
Breeding Merle to Merle Just Don't!!!!!!!! There is a high probability of SERIOUS MEDICAL PROBLEMS! The babies may be completely deaf, many have bad eyes with reduced vision to blindness and many have organ problems leading to failure. Why take that chance? There is never an excuse to take the chance of breeding a double merle!
